According to current reports, there are 25 confirmed incidents of women with BIA-ALCL in Canada, and a staggering 23 of these are associated with BIOCELL breast implants. In the US, 89% of BIA-ALCL cases have been associated with BIOCELL. And in France, the majority of the 53 confirmed cases of BIA-ALCL that exist are also associated with BIOCELL. BIOCELL is the name of the textured shell that is made with NATRELLE® breast implants. Manufactured by Allergan, this textured shell is designed to help keep the implant in place once inserted into the body (unlike smooth implant shells, which are believed to move around and thus increase the risk of rotation, displacement and unwanted shifting). It does this because BIOCELL is constructed with a rough surface to which tissue can adhere, so the implant stays put where the surgeon places it.
Textured breast implants were introduced to the market over 30 years ago, and were popular for about a decade. However, in recent times textured implants are no longer as popular. Today, the majority of women getting breast augmentation receive smooth implants, which have never been associated with BIA-ALCL. This is fortunate, because you may be at a higher risk of developing BIA-ALCL if you have BIOCELL implants. In fact, Dr. Kara has known about the link for several years now. That's why he never uses BIOCELL.
Allergan offers textured surfaces for round and teardrop implant shapes. Both the NATRELLE 410 and NATRELLE INSPIRA are constructed with smooth or BIOCELL textured surfaces. The NATRELLE Classic Round implant does not come with BIOCELL.
